How do I handle distant relatives requests for money?

I’m a american women married to an indian man for almost three years. We just acquired a business using every penny we had and went into significant debt. However, as soon as we bought the business. Distant cousines, uncles, aunts, brother n laws somehow has got the thought that money flows like water in america and request for money has become numerous and ridiculous. A uncle just called and asked if we would help with his daughters wedding, and he only need $5,000.00. His own brother-n-law asked for $10,000.00 even though he is a relatively successful doctor in india. We are semi supporting his kids since we are sending money to my husband’s mom in which the kids are living there. We are not rich but we are working on it. I’m generous when people really need money for clothes and food. But these people have enough money. If we give to one person, then all of the others will want a similiar handout.

Just tell them you can’t help them. Simply say No. In India people think if you are in US you are Rich. Its not necessarily the case. Don’t give any explanations. Just say no its not feasible for you.
